Tasting: Thorn-Clarke Chardonnay

Image
Thorn-Clarke Mount Crawford Barossa Winemaker other citr Eden Valley Australia $15 Winery Review:  Brilliant yellow. Dried pear, lemon zest, honeysuckle and a hint of vanilla on the fragrant nose. Fleshy and smooth on the palate, offering fresh melon, pear nectar and tangerine flavors and a hint of bitter quinine that adds back-end cut. Closes on a subtle leesy note, showing very good energy and lingering citrus character. My Review: I did not really like this wine. The wine had pretty medium amounts of tannin and I agree that is was a quite refreshing wine, but I think that the bitterness from the tangerine and the other citrus notes, distracted me from enjoying it.  I tried this wine by itself.

Tasting: Villa Pozzi Pinot Grigio

Image
Villa Pozzi Pinot Grigio Sicily Italy 2015 $11 Winery Review:  This opens with delicate aromas reminiscent of white spring flower and a whiff of orchard fruit. On the palate, fresh acidity underscores creamy Bartlett pear and nectarine zest that lead to a clean, bright finish. My Review: This was a beautiful floral Pinot Grigio that had nice pear aromas that lead to a nice low acidic wine. This wine was refreshing and left the a nice clean finish on the palate.  I tasted this wine by itself.

Winery Visit: Whitebarrel

Image
(Outdoor patio right off of the main tasting  room/ great room) Twas' a beautiful and cold day, which meant that it was a great to do a winery tour of a local winery with some friends. we chose to embark on a wine tour to the quaint and local Whitebarrel winery, rihgt down the street in the New River Valley. We took a brief, semi-"express," tour of the facilities. once there we gathered in the beautiful great room adn waited for everyone to arrive in order to start the tour. We started by going to the patio, which was the perfect vantage point to see the majority of the 17 acre property. This smallish winery grows around 14 different grapes, both red and white, as well as figs and hops for other wines and beers. So after our first stop at the patio, we venture out into the field to get a close up of the vines as well as the small fig garden.  (Cabernet Franc vines as well as a few other varieties) (The rear side of the main house and the fig garden)

Tasting: Villa Pozzi Moscato

Image
Villa Pozzi Moscato Sicily Italy 2016 $11 Winery Review:  This Moscato features aromas of fresh figs, apricot and orange blossoms. This crisp and refreshing wine is slightly effervescent, with a gentle sweetness that invites another glass. My Review: This was a gentle smooth wine that is generously refreshing. There were nice fresh citrus fruit notes that added a nice slight sweetnes to the wine.  I tasted this wine by itself.

Tasting: Elsa Bianchi Malbec

Image
Elsa Bianchi  Malbec Mendoza  Argentina  2015 $16 Winery Review:  This Malbec is red-violet in color, with aromas of plums and black cherries and a subtle, smoky scent. The beauty of Malbec in Argentina is its ability to combine a rich, weighty mouth-feel with a soft silkiness normally associated with lighter wines. Elsa Malbec takes the promise of the nose through to the palate, with dark fruits that mimics the aroma. The soft, supple palate and smooth tannins lead to a round and harmonious finish. My Review: This was a nice and simple red wine that has medium tannins. There were nice floral notes with nice strawberry and plum notes. I tasted this wine by itself.

Tasting: Skyfall Red Blend

Skyfall  Red Blend  (55% Merlot, 22% Syrah, 15% Cab Sav,  4% Mourvedre, 2% Cab Franc,  2% Grenache) Columbia Valley, Washington United States 2015 $20 Winery Review:  A blend of 55% Merlot, 22% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Mourvedre, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Grenache. Wonderful berry fruit on the nose with integrated oak notes woven throughout. On the palate black cherry and blackberries mingle with spice and oak notes. A broad and rich wine with a long elegant finish.                   My Review: This was a very fun and flavorful wine. I enjoyed the intense flavors of tabacco and cherry, which presented itself in the mild to strong tannins present in the wine. There was a nice woody finish, that had a nice oaky taste.  I tried this wine by itself.
